Katy Perry had no idea her appearance on hit children's show Sesame Street would cause such a controversy, because TV producers had no objections to her revealing outfit during filming.

The "I Kissed A Girl" hitmaker filmed a clip alongside puppet Elmo for the program last year, during which the pair sang a child-friendly version of her song "Hot N Cold."

But the low-cut dress she wore for the shoot landed her in trouble with concerned parents, who complained to TV bosses after viewing promo photos, prompting show executives to scrap the footage.

Perry insists she would have been happy to swap her costume for a more conservative outfit, if only the issue had been brought to her attention earlier.

She tells Vanity Fair magazine, "They (TV bosses) didn't tell me there was a problem. We had 15 outfits to choose from; I would have just gone and changed."

But the singer refuses to pay attention to the criticism she received following the incident - because her pop career has continued to soar in the wake of the TV scandal.

She says, "I don't care what they say about my boobs. People are buying my songs; I have a sold-out tour. I'm getting incredible feedback from my music."

Perry poked fun at the Sesame Street controversy when she appeared on Saturday Night Live shortly after the axe, playing a busty teenage librarian, wearing a tight-fitting Sesame Street T-shirt, in a skit for the comedy show.
