Rumors have quickly spread on Facebook about the future of the Kroger located on 12th Street, and it seems those rumors are true.

KPLC spoke with the corporate affairs manager, Sparkle Anderson, who confirmed the closing and issued a statement.

“We have made the very difficult decision to close the Kroger store located at 600 12th Street in Lake Charles, Louisiana when the lease expires in July. We carefully assess all alternatives before closing a store. Within the past several years, we have attempted measures to increase sales, profitability and the shopping experience at this location. We greatly appreciate the Lake Charles Associates and community. The approximately 79 Store Associates employed at this location will be offered positions at other nearby stores.”

I was somewhat upset when the Hwy 14 location shut its doors back in 2011, but I quickly got accustomed to visiting the 12th Street location. Then with the opening of the Walmart Market on Ryan Street, it made grocery shopping much more convenient for me.

Though I must admit, the 12th Street store has been in dire need of a facelift for quite some time. As with anything in life, all things eventually come to an end, and maybe that's what's best at the moment. My question now is will the Market Basket and Walmart Market on Ryan Street be enough in that area? Not everyone in that area will be willing to drive to the Kroger on Country Club like I do from time to time.

What do you think? Sound off in the comments.
