We'll stop short of saying Lady Gaga has "gone country," but her new song "A-Yo" definitely borrows from the new Nashville sound. The latest find from her upcoming Joanne album also borrows one of country music's hottest songwriters.

Hillary Lindsey ("Girl Crush," "Jesus Take the Wheel") helped Gaga write "A-Yo" with Mark Ronson and BloodPop. It's a foot-stumping pop song that finds the singer weaving a message around thick, twangy guitars and hard rock chords. Lyrically, the outlaw track is being described as "raw" and "rootsy."

Lady Gaga's flirtation with country music is not without precedent and shouldn't be totally unexpected. Recently she told Rolling Stone Country that she loves country music, especially Johnny Cash and Garth Brooks.

“When I was little, my father used to play ‘I’ve Got Friends in Low Places’ really loud in the basement, and I’d catch him down there dancing by himself, screaming real loud,” Gaga says. “I thought it was cool.”

In 2014 Gaga attended a Brooks concert and posed for a photo with him and his wife Trisha Yearwood.

In April, Beyonce also dropped a country-tinged track. "Daddy's Lessons" was included on her Lemonade album. Critics and fans agreed her song would not be out of place on contemporary country radio, although it received minimal airplay.

Lindsey is shown as a co-writer on several songs from Lady Gaga's Joanne album. The pop star brought the songwriter on stage during the first stop on her Dive Bar Tour. They sang a song called "Million Reasons" together.
