Legendary Artists Who Played Lake Charles Civic Center

Lake Charles, Louisiana (KNGT-FM) - If you're from Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana, odds are you've probably been to a big event inside the Lake Charles Event Center.

Did You Know? Facts About the Lake Charles Event Center

The Lake Charles Event Center has been a major part of Southwest Louisiana entertainment and events for more than five decades. The complex includes the Coliseum, the Rosa Hart Theatre, and three floors of meeting and event spaces used for everything from exhibits and job fairs to festivals, Mardi Gras balls, Broadway-style shows, monster truck events, high school proms, and much more.

The Event Center first opened its doors in 1972, making it more than 50 years old. The main arena inside the complex is called the Sudduth Coliseum, named after former Lake Charles mayor James Sudduth. The arena can hold up to 7,450 people for concerts and large events.

One of the most unusual facts about the Civic Center grounds involves an old steamboat. Buried somewhere on the property is the Borealis Rex, a stern-wheel steamboat built in 1888. The vessel once served as the primary transportation route between Lake Charles and Cameron. The boat sank during a hurricane in 1918, was raised in 1919, and continued operating until 1930.
