When a Louisiana proud resident leaves the homeland of flavor and food, we take a chance on the various foods we encounter. I remember on a trip to Colorado, we ate at someplace that I was told had "spicy" food. As everyone around me from the Colorado area seemed like their tongues were on fire, I was left sitting there wondering why mine was so bland. I literally had to doctor my own food up to get it even close to "par" to call it edible. It seems Dana from Lake Charles had a similar experience on her recent trip to Utah.

She never mentioned the place she actually went, but she did show off the menu advertising gumbo. Seemed legit enough, a simple chicken and sausage gumbo. They called it "Southern Style", not sure what that means but sure, go ahead. I've never been served cornbread on the side of my gumbo, but it doesn't seem too far of a stretch to think that some people in Louisiana do indeed have cornbread with their gumbo. We always had cornbread with chili, with beans AND rice, but we will talk about that at another time.

What poor Dana got as "gumbo" resembled more of a vegetable soup with meat in it rather than a gumbo. That red color in there is what you think it is. I have never had tomato in gumbo, but I don't hate the idea. I won't try it, I don't want my Louisiana card taken from me. Sadly, the place seemed to be out of cornbread so they substituted it with oyster crackers. Well, they're not right but at least they were close to a saltine. They're the same thing, just small, annoying, and you can't properly dip them in your gumbo or scoop the rice in. Speaking of rice, there was none to be found in the concoction. So what was the result?

It didn't taste like gumbo at all lol...but was still pretty good!

I am glad she kept an open mind about the situation. One commenter mentioned that it was just vegetable soup with flair. Dana agreed that it indeed resembled more a vegetable soup rather than a gumbo, but it was still good. Whatever it was.
