Louisiana Grocery Chain Lays Off Hundreds – Is Your Store Affected?
It has been reported that Kroger is laying off roughly 200 employees nationwide, months after a failed merger with Albertsons.
The enormous layoffs are taking place at the corporate level, across three office sites at the company's headquarters in Cincinnati, despite sources claiming that they have nothing to do with the failed $24.6 billion transaction.
The Kroger-Albertsons merger was banned by a federal judge in December of last year on the grounds that it would result in "undue market concentration." According to this article, Albertsons is suing Kroger for allegedly breaking the terms of the merger deal.
Supermarket News reports that the Cincinnati-based company laid off employees last week in an effort to "shut down or lower the priority of projects the company has opted not to continue."
The chain's technology and digital team, as well as its data gathering and analysis arm, are reportedly among those laid off.
The biggest grocery store chain in the United States is Kroger. According to its website, the chain has 8 locations throughout 5 communities in Louisiana. There are 1,320 sites across the nation.
When one of the network's top executives acknowledged that Kroger was increasing the price of basic goods like milk and eggs over the rate of inflation, the chain came under fire last summer.
