McNeese Takes 21-Game SLC Win Streak on the Road to Nicholls
The McNeese Cowboys are gearing up for its final road game of a brutal road stretch which has included a blowout win over UTRGV and a 1-point victory over Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Now McNeese State will round out its road trip against Nicholls, as the Cowboys and the Colonels are set to duke it out for the second time this season.
McNeese, currently ranked 56th in the NCAA NET rankings, has dominated the Southland Conference with a perfect record in conference play, marking the best start in school history. The Cowboys (16-5 overall) have also won 11 straight games.
It depends on who you ask, but some would say the league's regular season race is over, but others don't see it that way.
The Cowboys are also currently amidst a 21-game Southland Conference winning streak which is the longest streak in the nation. Their 11-game overall win streak ranks as the fifth-longest in the NCAA, and they’ve won six straight road games, tying for the fourth-longest active streak in the country.
Since Will Wade got to Lake Charles, McNeese has posted a 27-1 conference record and a 13-1 mark in road SLC games. That is pretty remarkable, and basically unheard of.
Even though McNeese currently holds a 3-game lead in the Southland Conference, there doesn't seem to be any sense of looking ahead for Will Wade and his bunch.
"You never bet against consistent behavior. We’re gonna prepare the same way we do every week. We don’t talk about winning the league championship—that’s a byproduct of the work we put in every day," Wade explained.
Wade doesn't seem to be letting his team get complacent soon. "Winning causes problems too. We’ve got to stay alert, stay on point, and keep a narrow focus. The more noise there is, the more narrow our focus has to be," he said.
Nicholls enters the game 12-9 overall and 6-4 in SLC play. The Colonels are currently in a three-way tie for fifth place in the standings alongside Northwestern State and Southeastern. When these two teams last met on January 11, McNeese secured an 80-71 victory at the Legacy Center. The Cowboys have also won five straight in the series and lead the all-time matchup 58-48.
"I thought they pumped us last time. We weren’t very physical. Their guards were more physical than ours. We need to play with more urgency and physicality than we did the first time," he emphasized.
Wade has always been very complimentary of Head Coach Tevon "Boog" Saddler and the program he is building at Nicholls.
"They've got good players, good coaching, and it's a great place. It's always a challenge to win there," said Wade
Tip-off is set for around 3:30 p.m. at Stopher Gym in Thibodaux, following the Cowgirls’ game at 1 p.m. Fans can watch the game on ESPN+ or listen on Power 92.1 FM.
