KNGT | Sulphur, LA — If you have driven I-210 Westbound toward Sulphur lately and suddenly found yourself wondering what lane you're supposed to be in, you ain't alone. That new lane split threw me for a loop the other day, and I found myself having to merge in a hurry. Well, y'all better get used to it. This one could be with us until October 2027.

We have talked a lot about the crazy traffic on I-10 with the new Calcasieu River Bridge project. Orange cones everywhere. Lanes moving around. One day you know exactly where you're going. The next day it feels like somebody moved the highway while you were sleeping. But the changes aren't just happening on I-10.

What's Happening On I-210 Westbound?

According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the I-210 West flyover ramp to I-10 West has been reduced to one lane. The change started September 25, 2026, and DOTD says it is expected to remain that way through October 2027. Yep. So this ain't one of those "deal with it for a couple weekends" situations. This is gonna be part of our drive for a while.

The left lane of I-210 West as you approach the flyover also has an 11-foot width restriction. DOTD says drivers can use the right lane of I-210 West and take Exit 1B to I-10 East, then use Exit 26 at PPG Drive. That sounds simple enough when you're sitting at home reading it. It's a little different when you're actually driving it. I found that out.

I was headed through there the other day and that lane split caught me off guard. Next thing I know, I'm trying to figure out where I need to be while everybody around me apparently has somewhere very important to be in the next 14 seconds. Welcome to driving in Southwest Louisiana.

Why Are They Doing This? This is all tied into the big I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge replacement project. Crews need the lane closure so they can build the new I-210 West to I-10 West flyover ramp. So while it might be a headache right now, there is a reason behind all those cones, barriers and lanes that seem to change every time we drive through Sulphur and Westlake.

We're basically watching a major highway project get built while we're still trying to use the highway. That's gonna make things interesting. Especially around 5 o'clock.

My biggest advice is pretty simple. If you haven't driven through that I-210 West split yet, pay attention before you get there. Don't wait until the last second like I did and suddenly realize you need to get over. And give folks a little room. We're all trying to figure this mess out.

DOTD is also asking drivers to slow down, watch for workers and equipment, and use extra caution around the construction zone. For current road conditions, closures and construction updates, you can check Louisiana 511 or the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. And if you drive through there every day, I'm curious. Has that new I-210 West lane split gotten you yet, or did you know exactly where you were going?

TRAFFIC NIGHTMARES: Top 5 Lake Charles & SWLA Streets to Avoid

You know the ones we are talking about. The streets where it seems like the traffic never stops. The ones that take you 10 minutes or more to pull out of a business to merge onto the street without getting run over, or where it seems that a thousand cars are coming down the road, and you feel like you will never be able to pull out.
