Friday Update from KPLC on SWLA Weekend Freezing Weather

According to KPLC, there has been little change in the forecast. The highest risk for freezing rain remains in Vernon Parish, with lower amounts farther south. Vernon, Beauregard, and Allen Parishes are now under an Ice Storm Warning, with 0.10 to 0.30 inches of ice possible from late Saturday into Sunday, with the highest amount in Vernon. Parts of Beauregard and Allen could see 0.10 to 0.20 inches.

Before the colder air arrives, parts of Southwest Louisiana could see thunderstorms on Saturday, with a few possibly becoming strong if the cold air holds off.

A Winter Weather Advisory now includes Calcasieu and Jeff Davis Parishes, where up to a tenth of an inch is possible, mainly a light glaze on elevated surfaces near I-10. Ice, if it develops, would mainly occur on Sunday morning. Some thunderstorms are possible on Saturday before colder air arrives. An Extreme Cold Watch is also in effect Sunday into Monday, with wind chills in the single digits to the teens.

  • Saturday: Showers are likely throughout the day, with a chance for thunderstorms by the afternoon. High near 46°. North winds around 10 mph, gusting up to 20 mph. Rainfall totals could reach ½ to ¾ of an inch.
  • Saturday Night: Rain continues early, then rain may mix with freezing rain after midnight, with freezing rain becoming more likely toward early Sunday morning. A few rumbles of thunder are possible. Low around 27° with gusty north winds.
  • Sunday: Freezing rain possible early, then a mix of rain and freezing rain through late morning. A slight chance of rain remains in the afternoon. High near 36° with northwest winds 10–15 mph.
