Toby Keith Enlists Willie Nelson for New ‘Wacky Tobaccy’ Collaboration
Toby Keith and Willie Nelson have teamed up for what may very well be the most awesome country music video of 2017 — and we say that without having seen it.
Keith is releasing a new single titled "Wacky Tobaccy" on Friday (June 23), and who better to appear in a video for a song with that subject matter than country music's principal marijuana advocate? After all, it's a pretty short list of country stars who own and operate their own line of weed, and Nelson is practically the poster child for weed in country music (or all of music).
The superstar wrote his new single with longtime collaborator Scotty Emerick. "Wacky Tobaccy" is the kind of popular phrase that lends itself perfectly to hanging a song around it, he says.
Country Stars Who've Smoked Weed
"Wacky Tobaccy is a slogan, a saying that's been around forever and no one has ever put it in a song," Keith says in a press release. "When we were working on it, somebody asked if the saying has ever been written in a song and I said, 'no, but they will now.' We recorded it and shot the video in Nashville. We got a cameo from Willie Nelson. We have a long-standing friendship. It's fortunate that we got him. 'Wacky Tobaccy' is written to the screws, and it fits in with what we do every night with the party crowd."
The lyrics are pure Toby Keith, imbued with the same sense of humor and do-your-thing philosophy that characterizes so many of his party anthems. "That old Wacky Tobaccy / When you feel it creeping up on you / That old Wacky Tobaccy / Kick back and let it do what it do," Keith sings.
Keith previously wrote a song titled "Weed With Willie" that was inspired by a real-life incident in which he didn't react well after smoking some pot with the country legend. The hilarious track appears on Keith's 2003 Shock'n Y'all album. Keith and Nelson also collaborated on the "Beer for My Horses" from 2002's Unleashed.
"Wacky Tobaccy" will be available at all digital retailers on June 23.
