Louisiana [KNGT-FM] - The calendar is about to turn, and with it comes a season that always gets the attention of everyone along the Gulf Coast. On June 1st, the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season officially begins, running through November 30th, and for those of us living along the Southern Gulf Coast, that date is never just another day on the calendar.

Each year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) tracks and forecasts storms across the Atlantic basin, working closely with the National Hurricane Center. But one thing many people don’t realize is this: NOAA doesn’t actually create the storm names.

Where do the Atlantic Hurricane names come from?

The naming system is maintained by the World Meteorological Organization’s Hurricane Committee. Storm names rotate on a six-year cycle, meaning many names return again and again. However, there’s an important exception, as some names are permanently retired.

After especially destructive hurricanes, affected countries can request that a name be removed from future use. If the WMO committee agrees, that name is retired forever and replaced with a new one beginning with the same letter and gender. A name is typically retired if the storm was deadly, extremely costly, historically significant, or if reusing it would cause confusion or emotional distress.

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1, 2026, and the peak months are typically mid-August through late September. That’s when conditions are most favorable for storm development, and when coastal communities pay the closest attention.

Now, the official list of 2026 storm names has been released. Some will feel familiar, others new, but all are part of the same rotating system that has been used for decades.
