Since the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control kennel has been opened, it is now totally empty. Florida isn't the only place with empty kennels, New Mexico, New York, Wisconsin, Colorado, and more are all reporting areas with empty shelters.

The reason? A lot of people sheltering in place are bringing the pets home for companionship. The humane society reported to Wired that some cities around the nation are seeing a spike of a 90% increase with applications for adoption well past nine times the usual rate.

The only hope, however, is that once we begin to return to normal, and start working again, that these pets don't become a nuisance and begin to be returned to the shelters they were rescued from.
