What Are Those I-10 Dirt Ramps? SWLA Finally Gets Answers
KNGT | Lake Charles, LA — If you’re like me, you’ve probably been driving down I-10 lately and thinking… what in the world are those big dirt ramps on the side of the road?
I see one every morning leaving the station, and there’s another one over on the Westlake side. Big ol’ piles of dirt just sitting there like something’s about to go down. I ain’t gonna lie… for a minute there, I thought maybe Evel Knievel was coming out of retirement and fixing to jump the Calcasieu River. I mean, it sure looks like a launch ramp, right?
Well… turns out it’s not for daredevils. It’s actually something pretty smart.
After doing a little digging on Facebook, I ran across the I-10 Calcasieu Bridge Project page, and they broke it down real simple. Those “ramps” are what they call trial embankments.
Now don’t let that fancy name throw you off.
Here’s the deal. Before they build the new bridge, engineers need to make sure the ground can handle all that weight, I mean we do live in a swamp ya know. So what they did was pile up a bunch of dirt on both sides of the river to see how the soil reacts. They’re watching to see how it settles, shifts, and holds up over time.
Basically… they are testing to make sure they have the right recipe.
Think of it like this. If you’re gonna build a house, you don’t just start throwing up walls and hope for the best. You make sure the foundation is solid first. Same idea here, just on a much bigger scale.
According to the project page, this is all part of the process to make sure the new I-10 bridge is safe and built to last. These test piles give engineers real data so there ain’t no guessing later on.
So yeah… no motorcycle jump. Kinda disappointing, I know.
But honestly, this is one of those things you don’t think about while you’re driving. There’s a whole lotta behind-the-scenes work going on before you ever see a single piece of that new bridge go up.
Next time you pass by those dirt mounds, at least now you know… it’s not a stunt show.
It’s science doing its thing right here in Southwest Louisiana.
