In 1992 Ricky Langley Murdered my Friend, 6-Year-Old Jeremy Guillory, Langley Could Go Free From Angola
According to KPLC, "the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeal has reversed the second-degree murder conviction of admitted child killer and pedophile Ricky Langley."
In 1992, Ricky Langley murdered my friend, Jeremy Guillory. At the time he was the toughest 6-year-old I'd ever met. I was about 9 and would spend the weekends at my cousin's house and Jeremy would be next door visiting with his relatives. He would follow us everywhere we would allow him to.
I remember getting the news like it was yesterday that Jeremy had gone missing, to later find out he was murdered, amongst other things I try not to think about.
More than 20 years later, Langley's second-degree murder conviction has been reversed by the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, which means he could be released back into society. It's unfair and scary to think he could be released from Angola at some point in the future, if not maybe sooner.
As if I haven't already, I've lost even more faith in our judicial system. I don't agree with the death penalty, but I do believe a person who's committed such a crime should never again see the light of day.
Upon hearing this latest news I've discovered that it's just as hard to talk about what happened to Jeremy as it was when I learned his life was cut short at such an early age. With that in mind, I can't begin to imagine what Jeremy's family is feeling, but I know it has to be unsettling to have to relive it more than 20 years later.
