Is the NFL Seriously Considering Killing the Extra Point?

How much would the game of football change if extra-point kicks were eliminated after each touchdown? We may find out soon as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is saying that his league may be considering that very idea.

Why is this idea even coming up? Well, according to Goodell, extra points are almost a foregone conclusion in the modern NFL:

“The extra point is almost automatic,” he said. “I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some-odd. So it’s a very small fraction of the play.” -- Roger Goodell via NFL.com via TIME.com

So what would happen after a touchdown? Well, if you score a touchdown, you'll get seven points. Then, you would have the option to get an extra point via a run or a pass -- BUT if you fail, not only would you not get the extra point, but you would lose a point off your touchdown. Meaning, you can get seven points for doing nothing, but might only get six points if you try for a conversion and fail. It would be a gamble.

Goodell said a committee will toss the idea around and did not put a time frame on the matter.
