More Texas Snacks Recalled from Walmart, Target, and Dollar General Stores

Recalls abound! Every day, it seems like Texas folks get vehicle recall notices, or we are alerted about a food that needs to be pulled from store shelves and pantries. In the next edition of "what shouldn't I buy," we look at a line of yummy snacks that you shouldn't put in your shopping cart in Texas and 16 other states across the country.

Truthfully, sugary snacks are likely an impulse buy for most shoppers at Houston Targets or Walmart stores in Beaumont. As you wander down the treat aisle, inhaling the aroma of sweet confection, keep moving past a line of Palmer's candy.

You can see a more comprehensive list of the more than 20 Palmer's products that are included in the recall, but here's an idea and what the logo looks like. Beware that not all recalled products bear the Palmer logo.

The Palmer Candy Company is based in Iowa and distributes their products across the country, including Texas retailers and wholesalers. The COVID pandemic elevated the term "supply chain" to the top of our collective conscience, and supply chain appears to be where this whole kerfuffle began.

According to the FDA website:

Palmer Candy was notified by its liquid coating supplier that there was a potential for contamination with salmonella from an ingredient that was potentially contaminated from one of their suppliers.

How can Salmonella hurt you?

An otherwise healthy person will feel like crap if they are contaminated with Salmonella. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea, and abdominal pain. It can also cause bleeding in the digestive tract. Not fun.

A case of Salmonella poisoning can be fatal to young children, the elderly, or anyone who is frail.

So what does that mean for Texas shoppers?

Palmer has notified their retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Dollar General stores, that “White Coated Confectionary Items” should be removed from shelves. If you arrive at your favorite Texas grocery establishment and see any of the more than 20 Palmer's products, steer clear for now.

The FDA website does detail the specific items Texas folks should avoid, and the list includes "sell by" dates in case you already have some in your pantry.

It's important to note than Palmer has ceased production of the products until they can figure out exactly how this happened.
