Mike Soileau surveyed listeners on their favorite place to buy king cakes, and Misse's Grocery was the top choice.

So, we moseyed on down to this locally-owned grocer for a closer look and were blown away by their bakery and meat section. King cakes are a family affair, made by Debra Guidry (who has been shaping and making cakes there since 1992), her daughter, Kayla Gary, who joined her in 2010, and her daughter-in-law, Maria Roche, who started in 2014.

They shape and bake all the king cakes, and the rest of the staff helps with the decorating. (And as you know, the person who gets the piece with the baby in it has to buy the next king cake!)

Misse's Grocery offers king cakes that serve 8-10 people all the way up to cakes sized to serve 35-45. You can get them plain, or with your choice of dozens of fillings. The most popular are cream cheese, Bavarian cream and peanut butter.

Those all sound delicious, but we also wanted to share some of our favorite specialty flavors, for those who want a truly decadent king cake this year:

  • Turtle: pecan praline cream filling with caramel icing and chocolate drizzle with roasted pecans.
  • Chocolate Pecan: chocolate icing with pecans and coconut.
  • Peanut Butter Cup: peanut butter cream filling with chocolate icing.
  • German Chocolate: chocolate filling with German chocolate topping and chocolate drizzle.
  • Cookies 'n' Cream: crushed chocolate cookies in cream cheese with a cookie topping.

Ready to get yours? Visit Misse's Grocery online here, call 337-527-6924 or stop by 106 E. Lincoln St., Sulphur, LA 70663.

We can't leave you without mentioning three more great features at Misse's Grocery:

1) Watch for Misse's Grocery's big one-day meat sale during the first week in March: Joe and his crew of three hand-cut all fresh meat daily and each of them have 30 years (or more) of experience. They are happy to do specialty cuts upon request and make their own stuffed pork chops, jalapeño bacon-wrapped chicken thighs, boudin-wrapped tenderloin and fresh ground beef.

2) Misse's Grocery has an amazing shrimp table: Buy headless shrimp by the pound.

3) Misse's Grocery's daily plate lunch specials are wildly popular. The menu changes weekly, but some of the most popular items are their brisket, barbecue t-bone and ribeye lunches. All lunches are served from 10:00am-1:30pm, Monday-Friday and the deli often has a line that snakes through the store as people crowd the counter to be served.
