It’s Time to Say Goodbye to Crawfish Season Across Louisiana

KNGT | Lake Charles, LA — Well, don's shoot the messenger...But Crawfish season is officially over. I know, I know, I didn't wanna be the guy that had to break the bad new. Seems like just a few days ago we were so excited that we were "in season".

The good news? We've only got about six months before they're back. According to Southern Living, the best crawfish season usually runs from late February through May, with early summer bringing the end of another great season. So if you've noticed it's getting harder to find a good sack of crawfish, there's a reason for it.

When does Crawfish Season Start in Louisiana?

The weather plays a huge part in when crawfish will be ready. When the temps get below 60 degrees, crawfish like to slow down. That makes them a whole lot harder for farmers to catch. Rainfall and weather during the year also help decide how good the season is going to be.

One trick I've always heard is to remember crawfish season by the holidays. We all know that Easter and Lent are the go-to Season but we can actually start getting them in December if Mother Nature plays nice.

To be honest it makes me a little sad passing crawfish fields and all the traps are in a big pile. It's like a big sign that just says "Hey The Season is Over". The wait always feels long. Then December rolls around, somebody makes that first Facebook post saying they found live crawfish, and just like that, we're all back in line with our ice chests.

Until then, I guess we'll just have to hold ourselves over with crabs, shrimp, and good memories from another great crawfish season. Six months will be here before we know it!
