
Major Retailer Closing Stores in 7 States: Is Texas at Risk?
One of the most well-known retailers in the United States is planning on closing certain locations in 2025, and these locations will be closed by May of this year. The retailer, who has been in business for over 120 years, is looking to downsize by closing certain locations across America starting with certain stores in seven states.
If you have ever visited a large mall, chances are you have seen this store or shopped there many times. They offer women's and men's clothes, jewelry, and bedding, and once even had the world's biggest makeup retailer located inside their stores across America, Sophoria.
JCPenney was founded back in 1902 in Kemmerer, Wyoming, by James Cash Penney has been in business for over 120 years now. As of 2025, JCPenney currently has 656 store locations across 49 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. It seems as of now that the number is about to shrink.

The company has announced that they plan on closing down eight locations of the popular department store in seven states, and that should take place by mid-May 2025.
JC Penney Locations Closing In 2025
According to USA Today, these locations include:
- The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California
- The Shops At Northfield in Denver, Colorado
- Pine Ridge Mall in Pocatello, Idaho
- West Ridge Mall in Topeka, Kansas
- Westfield Annapolis Mall in Annapolis, Maryland
- Fox Run Mall in Newington, New Hampshire
- Asheville Mall in Asheville, North Carolina
- Charleston Town Center in Charleston, West Virginia
Back in January 2025, USA Today also reported that,
JCPenney announced it had partnered with Forever 21 to create a new company called Catalyst Brands. The merger also includes Brooks Brothers, Aéropostale, Lucky Brand, Nautica, and Eddie Bauer. Catalyst Brands is expected to open 1,800 store locations and hire 60,000 employees.
As of now, according to the list above, Texas locations of JCPenney will not be closing, but if more news breaks about closures, we will give you the update.
