The 71-year-old Maplewood branch of the Calcasieu Parish Public Library System in Sulphur will soon be closed and converted into a headquarters for the Library To-Go program, according to CPPL Director, Dr. Gabriel Morely.

The branch will close for the conversion on June 30th. Beginning in August, Maplewood residents will be eligible to register for home delivery of books, DVDs, and other materials, including laptops, iPads, and Internet Hot Spots.

“We knew there were people who wanted to benefit from our services but were unable to get to the library,” Morley said. “Library To-Go remedied that problem by establishing a homebound delivery service. Patrons tell us what they want and we deliver it to them on a regular schedule. The service is easy to use, efficient, and has received rave reviews from patrons. At this point we are ready to expand the program.”

According to the CPPL, the Maplewood location is one of the most underutilized branches in the parish, and was chosen to be converted in the outreach headquarters for the Library To-Go program for this reason, and also because it is centrally located within an easily defined geographical boundary.

The Maplewood Branch opened in November 1944, originally on the ground floor of a construction office before moving to a room in the Maplewood Baptist church and through several other locations as the library continued to grow.

The branch’s current location was renovated in 1993, and has a collection size of over 15,000 books.
