Nashville will premiere its fifth season in January, and now fans can get an early look at some of the new storylines in a new trailer.

A brief, 15-second trailer posted to Instagram on Friday (Sept. 16), giving fans the first look we've had so far of the new season, which will be Nashville's first on its new network, CMT.

It looks like there's more drama coming in two of the main relationships on the show, with an intense exchange between Deacon Claybourne and Rayna Jaymes, and another between Juliette Barnes and Avery Barkley.

Season 4 concluded with a reunion between Juliette and Avery that was cut short when Juliette's plane went missing on its way back to Nashville, in a cliffhanger that producers admit was deliberately designed to make the show a more attractive package to a new network after ABC abruptly canceled the show.  Hayden Panettiere -- who plays Barnes -- has been confirmed for Season 5 on CMT, along with Connie Britton, Charles Esten, Sam Palladio, Jonathan Jackson, Clare Bowen, Lennon Stella, Maisy Stella and Chris Carmack. Will Chase and Aubrey Peeples will not be series regulars, as previously reported, though it's unclear if either will make guest appearances.

Carolina Chocolate Drops founder Rhiannon Giddens is also joining the show for Season 5 in a recurring role, and Emmy-nominated transgender actress Jen Richards will appear in a recurring role as Allyson Del Lago, a physical therapist. The casting marks CMT’s first transgender character and makes Richards the first out transgender actor on the network.

Producers recently put out a casting call for another new role on the show, Clay, a 21-to-26-year-old African American male who wants to become a big player in Music City. No actor has yet been announced in that role.

Nashville is slated to premiere on CMT with a two-hour episode on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 9PM ET.
