Let’s Celebrate National Squirrel Appreciation Day Together

🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — If you grew up in Southwest Louisiana, chances are you know about about squirrels. Some folks think they are cute. Some folks think they are a nuisance. And a whole lot of hunters around here appreciate them every single year, usually with a frying pan involved.

I love that we celebrate all kinds of days here, and today its National Squirrel Appreciation Day, according to the National Day Calendar.

How many Types of Squirrels are there in the World?

Experts report there are more than 200 squirrel species around the world. Some of the oldest on record date back to the 1700's.

First are ground squirrels. They are often labeled as pests because they can tear up land and property.

Next up are tree squirrels. These are the common ones we see every day. They live in trees in our backyards. These are the ones that most of us grew up hunting in the woods behind our mawmaws house with that BB Gun we got for Christmas that time...

The last group is the flying squirrel. NO, they do not actually fly, or have wings, but they sure look like it. They have loose skin between their little legs that lets them glide though.

So if you see any Squirrels today, make sure to be nice and maybe just admire one of the many creation we have here on Earth. And just maybe, let them use your bird feeder as a buffet to celebrate.
