Why Safety Matters in Louisiana

Louisiana has some of the highest crime rates in the country. Violent crimes, like assault, happen at about 9 incidents per 1,000 people. That’s higher than the national average of 4.43.

Property crimes, like theft and burglary, have also increased. In 2026, there were about 36 incidents per 1,000 people in Louisiana, compared to the national rate of 22.89.

Even though crime rates are high, many people in Louisiana feel safer than the numbers suggest. Surveys show that actual experiences with crime are decreasing, but concerns about safety are still high.
