A John Mayer song may have saved the relationship between singer Sam Hunt and his then-girlfriend Hannah Lee Fowler, now his wife. That song was Mayer's "Edge of Desire" from the musician's 2009 album Battle Studies, as Hunt revealed to Taste of Country Nights.

Speaking to hosts Evan and Amber just days before the 2019 CMA Awards, the "Kinfolks" crooner recalled a pivotal moment between the pair painted by the John Mayer deep cut. The tune seemingly prompted a reconciliation as the two approached a possible end to their courtship.

"There's a song that I remember it came on in the car back several years ago when we were, like, on the verge of maybe breaking up," Hunt explains. "And the tension that was in the vehicle while that song played, I think, kept us together. It was a John Mayer song called 'Edge of Desire.'"

He continues, "I always remember that. If I ever hear that song, I think about that moment. She was through with me, she was [like] 'I'm done.' And I was taking her back to her car, and that song came on. Then there was just something; some tension came into the car that was like, OK, there's something here. … I've got to give him a little credit for that."

Hunt has since written plenty of more personal songs for his significant other. After all, she's the partner to whom he's been attached (in some form or another) since before his rise to fame.

Elsewhere in the interview, Hunt was asked to name his dream seat-mate for the CMA Awards, other than his wife. The singer gave a nod to country legend and 2019 CMA Awards co-host Reba McEntire, to whom he paid tribute at last month's CMT Artists of the Year show.

"I did this song for Reba McEntire honoring [her] a few weeks ago for CMT," Hunt replies. "[We] played 'Fancy' and she was there. So maybe sitting beside Reba to ask her if she approved of my performance."

As for fans itching for the singer's next album, as well as a follow-up to last month's "Kinfolks," Hunt has good news. "I've got another song coming out here in a couple of weeks," he says. "I'm turning in the record in January, and it'll come out before we start touring in the summer. So I don't know an exact date but within that window."

Leave it to Hunt to keep listeners on the edge of their seats.
