Want to do something fun with your family and friends? The deadline to register for the annual Mardi Gras Shoebox Float contest is Wednesday, December 20, so get signed up!

Each year the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau invites the community to participate in the annual event where kids, adults, clubs and organizations, and even companies can come together to build a Shoebox Float of their own. It's open to everyone to participate, all you have to do is submit an entry.

How do I make a Mardi Gras Shoebox Float you ask? It's simple. Get yourself a cardboard shoebox and start decorating.  Beads, feathers, glitter, glue, lights, sequins, and more can be used to make your float resemble a real-life Mardi Gras float.

Registered floats will be dropped off at the bureau Welcome Center, located at 1205 N. Lakeshore Drive in Lake Charles on Friday, January 12, between 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., with judging taking place Saturday, January 13. There will we an awards ceremony at noon.  Floats will be displayed until Wednesday, February 14, and the People’s Choice Award will also be presented on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m., said a media release.
