Organizers across southwest Louisiana have ceremonies planned on Memorial Day to honor members of the military who gave their lives in service to the United States of America.

At 9AM on Monday (5/28), Vinton Mayor’s Armed Forces committee and the Louisiana Army Explorers of Sulphur will host a ceremony at VFW Post 9854 on LA 109 South. The Louisiana Army Explorers is a youth program for 12 to 17-year-olds supported by the U.S. Army, Reserves, and National Guard. Essay contest winners will be recognized during the event, flags will be displayed down Veterans Memorial Highway, and a reception will follow.

In Kinder, the cemetery association will remember the fallen with the Avenue of Flags, an address from a retired member of the military, presentation of the colors by veterans, and a roll call and bell toll. The ceremony will take place at 9:30AM at Kinder-McRill Memorial Cemetery on Kinder Cemetery Road.

In Welsh at 2PM, veterans from American Legion Post 283 and VFW Post 9046 will host a ceremony at the Welsh Community Center on Palmer Street, with a reception to follow at the Welsh Museum.

American Legion Frank Thibodeaux Post 520 is hosting a Memorial Day parade Monday at 4PM. It will start at the intersection of South Main and Market Streets, with a celebration following at Marcus Cain Memorial Park on Peters Street.

From sunrise to sunset, weather permitting, over 800 flags donated by the families of deceased soldiers will be on display for The Avenue of Flags at Orange Grove-Graceland Cemetery on Broad Street.
