Welsh Greyhounds Win The 2A State Football Championship
The Welsh Greyhounds are the Louisiana State Class 2A Football Champions! The final score was Greyhounds 38 - Hawks 26.
Zach Hayes and Da'ren Zeno connected several times for huge touchdowns to lead the dogs to the victory!
Welsh started their scoring onslaught early in the 1st quarter with a 40 yard FG from their kicker Lopez.
The game was out of reach for the St. Helena Hawks at halftime as the score was 31-0 Greyhounds. It was a quality performance by all 3 teams of the Greyhounds (offense, defense, special teams).
The play of the game was when Welsh QB Zach Hayes snagged a bad FG snap with his left hand and rolled out to the left sideline looking for a receiver. With several Hawk defenders barring down on him he lofted the ball into the end zone with a desperation throw. A Hawk defender was waiting on the ball for an easy interception, when all of a sudden Greyhound RB Alec Iguess cut in front of him and snatched the ball for the touchdown!
Alec Iguess made another critical play when he successfully fielded an onside kick with 1:58 left to go in the 4th quarter. This gave the Greyhounds the chance to run out the clock to seal the victory!
It was a well coached and played game for the Greyhounds. Both teams showed good sportsmanship throughout the game.
Congratulations to the Welsh Greyhounds, the fans, and the city of Welsh!
