Brands & Fashion Trends Defined By The 90s Hip-Hop Era
Plaid flannel button-downs, like the ones Biggie rapped about in Juicy, were a major part of 90's fashion back in the day. When Biggie rapped, "Way back, when I had the red and black lumberjack With the hat to match," everyone knows what he was talking about. Plaid flannel button-downs have been around since the 1700s, and to be honest, they have always been in style.
The 90s Hip-Hop era shaped the world of fashion and set the bar for what was hot and what was not. The hottest name brands on the planet lent their latest styles to rap's biggest artist. In return, designers enjoyed fashion superstardom as music fans rushed out to purchase their latest creations. Hip-Hop and fashion go hand-in-hand and today the genre continues to be the profit leader in the industry.
When you talk about major fashion trends, the plaid flannel button-down became a quintessential part of the '90s Hip-Hop era. TLC, Ice Cube, Tupac, everyone was rocking a plaid button-down on their back, around their waist, or both. Outside of Hip-Hop, the grunge community also adapted plaid as its signature full-on "look."
The 90s Hip-Hop scene set the trend for the fashion scene. It was all about bright colors, baggy jeans, dolphin earrings, Kangol hats, stripes, flannel shirts, OVERSIZED shirts and pants, combat boots, dookie chains, and funky hats like the Kangol, the collegiate Cap, bucket hats, and more. The legacy of the ‘90s was everywhere from runways, CD and magazine covers, TV shows, blockbuster movies, and music videos.
