🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — It happens every year, we get a Christmas present that we don't want, now what do we do with it? You know the one. You smiled real big when you opened it. Said thank you. Gave a hug. Then later you looked at it and thought… well, what in the world am I gonna do with this. And to make it worse, the receipt is long gone.

Good news. You still might not be stuck with it.

According to ABC News, a lot of big-name stores will still take back holiday gifts. But heads up, things have changed this year, and it could cost you a few bucks if you’re not careful.

First off, let’s talk fees. The National Retail Federation says almost three out of four stores now charge a return fee. That means when you mail something back, they keep part of your refund. Yep. Ouch.

How much are Retailers Charging to Return Gifts?

-Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx both charge $11.99 per package. That comes right off your refund.
- Macy’s is charging about $9.99.
- JCPenney is around $8.
- J. Crew comes in at about $7.50.

That don’t sound like much at first, but if you’re returning a couple things, it adds up quick.

What is the Return Deadline for Christmas Gifts?

- If you got something from Amazon or Walmart, you’ve got until January 31 to return it. That gives you a little breathing room.
- Target shoppers have until January 24 for most items.
- Best Buy has the shortest window. You’ve got until January 15, so don’t sleep on that one.

Miss those dates, and you might be stuck regifting that thing next year.

Now here’s how you can dodge some of these fees.

You can always return the item in the store instead of mailing it back. But im like the rest of you.... I hate going to the store.

Another trick is joining store loyalty programs. For example, Macy’s won’t charge a return fee if you’re part of their rewards program. That’s free to join and could save you ten bucks right there.

And hey, if all else fails, there’s always that one cousin with a birthday comin’ up real soon.

Just sayin’.
