Green, Gold and Purple — What Do the Colors of Mardi Gras Mean? [TRIVIA]

Who decided that there would be official Mardi Gras colors?  Strangely enough, it was a Russian. Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich Romanov suggested the colors while visiting Louisiana in the 1870s.  Green, purple, and gold -- but why those colors?  What do they mean?
