It’s National Dictionary Day! Celebrate Words With a Cajun Twist
🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — Stop what you are doing for a second and lets celebrate National Dictionary Day. Today, October 16th to be exact. Today honors all the words, and a guy that made sure we spell them the right way, Noah Webster, the inventor of the Dictionary. Known as the "Father of the American Dictionary," he influenced the modern word meanings and spellings. We also celebrate today because it was his Birthday.
FUN FACT: Webster studied over 26 languages, including Latin, Greek, French, and even Sanskrit, in order to truly understand the origins of words. (I can barely speak English)
Lets be honest, we all know that we will never be able to learn all of the words that are in that book, so let try to just learn the important ones.
Longest Word in the Dictionary
Lets start our learning with the biggest and baddest word on the streets: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, (yes it's a word, I looked it up just to make sure) This 45-letter word refers to a lung condition brought on by inhaling tiny particles. If you're like me, you took one look and said "pass".
Now that the longest is over, and we have all become a little smarter, let's move on to some of the dictionary's funniest terms that are also enjoyable to use:
Funniest Words in the Dictionary
Bumbershoot is an archaic term for umbrella.
The word "Bumfuzzle" refers to confusing someone.
Cattywampus: denotes crooked or improperly aligned.
Counterclockwise means "Widdershins."
So celebrate National Dictionary Day by getting a dictionary today, opening it, and learning a new Word!
