Local Teacher Wins Grammy

Local music teacher, Mickey Smith Jr., won the Grammy Music Educator Award this past Sunday. Smith helps make students feel loved, valued, and wanted. Mickey Smith Jr. teaches music at Maplewood Middle School in Sulphur and has been with the school for close to 15 years.

Mickey Smith has won and been nominated many times for numerous awards. In 2015, he was nominated for Grammy Music Educator Award and won first runner up. Also in 2016, he received Citizen of the Year, as well as four times Educator of the Year in 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014.

Smith believes students succeed no matter their talent level because the focus is not on the subject matter but on showing students they matter. Smith is known for inspiring, empowering, and educating his students through music.
