Luke Bryan Coming to ‘American Idol’ Reboot?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bryan, Lionel Richie and Charlie Puth are all on the short list that ABC and producers Fremantle Media and Core Media would like to see join Katy Perry on the judges' panel. Perry is so far the only judge confirmed for the show, with auditions set to begin in Florida on Aug. 17.
Sources tell THR that Richie is a frontrunner with the network and all of the producers, while Bryan would make sense with ABC's strong relationship with country music. Puth is seen as a distant shot, the sources say, noting that negotiations have not begun with any of the singers.
Country Singers Who Were Rejected by American Idol
ABC, Fremantle and Core all declined to comment on THR's story.
Keith Urban has said he would consider returning to the show, but the THR article did not mention him as a candidate. Urban skirted the question in an interview with CMT, offering only, "Possibly. Yeah, it’s music—that’s good! Music’s good."
"There’s a lot of moving parts. That’s a good political answer, isn’t it?" Urban adds. "But it’s also quite true of the state of it right now. There’s a lot of moving parts in everybody’s camps. We’ll see what happens."
