METAIRIE, La. (AP) — A man is dead after he shot a Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Sheriff Newell Normand says 48-year-old Deputy Nicholas Songy is hospitalized Saturday at University Medical Center and "alert and doing well."

Authorities have not released the identity of the man who was killed.

Normand told the New Orleans Advocate the SWAT team stormed the second floor of a house where the suspect was holed up and ordered the man to lower his weapon. They shot him after he refused.

The incident began when Songy arrived to investigate a domestic disturbance call. Songy went into the backyard where he encountered the armed man. Normand says gunfire was exchanged and Songy was hit in the leg. It was unknown where the suspect was hit.
