According to the CMA Awards a musical event is described as such:

This Award is based on the musical performance of the duo as a unit on a country single or album release. Musical Event of the Year. This Award goes to each artist and produce. An event is defined as a collaboration of two or more people either or all of whom are known primarily as a Country artist.

Lil Nas X and Billy Ray took the track and "remixed" it with Cyrus singing the hook of Old Town Road. A single that vent viral all over the social media universe. It then made its way onto the Country Billboard and cemented itself at the top spot until Billboard removed it saying it didn't have enough country music elements in it. Apparently that removal from the charts didn't stop it from becoming "award winning" .The song also won the 2019 MTV VMA award and became diamond certified.

It's interesting how the CMA's, literally the BIG award for country music, recognizes the song to have a country artist and understand the impact it had on the genre this past year. Yet Billboard turned away from it without any real reasoning. Yet, they let Nelly's version of Cruise stay around along with Ludacris rapping on Dirt Road Anthem. It just achey breakys my heart.

It's not the first, nor will it be the last country style crossover from another genre. It just goes to show you that if the cards are against you, you still have a chance at winning in the end.
