Oreo Announces “Snickerdoodle” Flavor On The Way

I don't care what recipe you have. My grandmother made the best snickerdoodle cookies on the face of the Earth. I will fight you if you say otherwise. Now that we have that out of the way, Oreo is letting us get a bit nostalgic by introducing their newest flavor for the holiday season with "Snickerdoodle" Oreos. Guess we will just try that diet next year, it seems. What is a Snickerdoodle? It's got some history for sure.

It started off back in the late 1800s as a favorite cookie of the Mennonites and Amish baking world. In 1891, they made it out into the world when a cooking teacher from New York published the recipe in a local newspaper for a column she would write. The recipe spread, and slowly gained popularity. What about the name? One popular story is that it's a horrible pronunciation of the German word "Schneckennudeln". Yes, I also said that in my worst German accent. "Schneckennudeln" basically means "crinkly noodles" which is a reference to the wrinkles that form on top of the cookie.

Oreo, of course, doesn't have the crinkles on top but the flavor is supposedly spot on for what we have become to know and love here in the south. According to Nabisco, the maker of Oreo Cookies, they combine sweet and cinnamon spices with their base. The cinnamon flavor is also found in the creme with the cookie topped off with red and green sugar to give it a holiday vibe. Early reviewers say that with the past cinnamon flavors from Oreo, they feel that this new flavor will indeed be spot on. The new cookies will be available for purchase on October 17 of this year for a limited time during the holiday season.
