“Ride Towards Tomorrow” Cycling Event This Weekend In Lake Charles
The Bryce River Foundation is set to launch its first-ever “Ride Towards Tomorrow” event, a cycling fundraiser, mental health expo, and pop-up market designed to raise awareness and support for suicide prevention efforts. Taking place on August 24, 2024, at Crying Eagle Brewing Company in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and serve as the kickoff for Suicide Prevention Month in September.
The foundation, named in honor of Bryce River Waldrop, is dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote mental health awareness, provide education, and offer resources to those in need. Through Ride Towards Tomorrow, the foundation aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues by fostering a community of support and open dialogue.
Cyclists of all levels can participate in one of three routes: a family-friendly 6-mile ride, a moderate 27-mile route for intermediate cyclists, or a challenging 50-mile ride for more experienced riders. The event also offers activities for non-cyclists, including a mental health expo featuring resources, counseling services, and suicide prevention training. A pop-up market will feature local vendors, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the foundation.
A special memorial garden will be set up to honor those lost to suicide and provide comfort to their families and loved ones. Scott Waldrop, CEO of the Bryce River Foundation, emphasized the importance of the event: “Cycling was one of River’s ways of coping with his depression. By launching this foundation and hosting this event, we’re working to build a supportive community that isn’t afraid to talk about mental health and suicide. Join us on August 24th as we ride towards a future where mental health is prioritized, stigma is eliminated, and everyone feels valued and supported.”
Suicide prevention remains a pressing concern, with Louisiana reporting 700 deaths annually. It is the third leading cause of death for those aged 10-24 and 24-34 in the state. The Bryce River Foundation’s mission is to provide resources and support to mental health professionals and organizations, ultimately saving lives and helping survivors navigate the aftermath of loss.
All proceeds from the event will go directly to the foundation. For more information on registration and pricing, visit bryceriverfoundation.org or follow their Facebook Page for updates.
