Lake Charles, LA [KNGT-FM] - Southwest Louisiana is remembering a true local legend whose story has been talked about for generations. The man known for an unbelievable but dangerous feat on the I-210 bridge in Lake Charles has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that still amazes people to this day.

If you’ve spent any time in Southwest Louisiana, you know the bridge well. Commonly referred to as the I-210 Bridge, it stretches across the Calcasieu River, connecting Sulphur and Lake Charles. Built in the early 1960s as a bypass to the busy I-10 corridor, the bridge stands more than 140 feet tall and runs about 1.6 miles in length. Its steep inclines and sweeping curves are enough to make most drivers grip the wheel a little tighter.

Early one Sunday morning, around 7:00 AM, he took off from the top. According to his own account, he reached speeds of over 50 miles per hour, racing down the incline in under a minute. It was a heart-pounding, 57-second ride that would go on to become part of local folklore and gave him the nickname "Flash". Have you ever seen it? Here you go.

Even more astonishing? He didn’t stop there. After completing the first run, he turned around and did the opposite side, and would go on to repeat the stunt multiple times.

We found out yesterday and confirmed with friends that Mr. Greg Demarie, aka Flash, has passed away at the age of 71 on Wednesday, April 15th. Many in the community are reflecting on the bold spirit and fearless attitude that made his story so unforgettable. It’s a reminder of a different time, and of one young man who turned an ordinary bridge into a legend. See Mr. Demarie's funeral arrangements here.

One of the most iconic voices in Southwest Louisiana, Gary Shannon, caught up with Greg 11 years ago and talked with him about the legendary ride. Here's what Greg had to say.
