Sun Belt Conference Follows SEC Lead to Play This Fall
Football is life in the South, and Saturday nights are revered in a way that not even a pandemic can stop our lust for this game.
The Mountain West and Big Ten conferences have announced they will not be playing any fall sports this year. The expectation was that many other conferences would follow suit, but so far that's not the case.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey took to social media to update their stance:
He didn't come out and say the SEC is playing football for sure. However, they've made it known for awhile now that their intentions are to play football this fall.
So what about the Sun Belt football conference? Right down the road, the ULL Ragin' Cajuns had another solid year of recruiting and are looking for a strong outing in 2020.
Brett McMurphy of the Stadium Network had this to say:
McMurphy is also reporting that Conference USA plans on playing football this fall minus Old Dominion (who canceled their fall sports), and Ross Dellenger of SI.com reports the American Athletic Conference will also play ball this fall.
That's great news about ULL because the Cajuns are the Pokes first opponent this season, tentatively scheduled for September 5. The Southland Conference also announced at their media days that they plan to play football in 2020.
Southland Conference Commissioner Tom Burnett said:
We are planning to proceed with the 2020 football season as scheduled, I would stress in the fall we want our fans there. Our athletic directors, our presidents want to have full stadiums for whatever capacity by percentage they can have.
