But the real draw of this homegrown Houston joint is its freestyle menu. Customers pick up a checklist-style menu and customize their burgers to their hearts’ content. So, if you’ve been dreaming of smashed patties loaded with kimchi relish and scallion aioli, this is the place for you."
Burger-chan isn’t your average burger joint. The name itself is a mashup of American and Japanese influences, just like their menu. It’s a spot where you can truly customize your burger to perfection, using a checklist-style menu to pick everything from the bun to the toppings. Want a smashed patty topped with kimchi relish and scallion aioli? No problem! That’s the kind of creative and bold flavors that make burger-chan stand out.
But it’s not just about the toppings. The patties are made from fresh ground chuck, and many of the sauces are crafted in-house. Burger-chan is all about high-quality ingredients, attention to detail, and flavors that pack a punch. The best part? It never feels gimmicky—just delicious.
Burger-chan first opened back in April 2016 in the underground food court of Greenway Plaza. Owners Diane and Willet Feng originally had plans for a Singaporean restaurant, but after some friendly persuasion, they decided to take over a burger space instead. That decision paid off big time! From 2016 to 2020, burger-chan built a loyal following and even received praise from food critics like Alison Cook of the Houston Chronicle and Eric Sandler of CultureMap.
For four years, burger-chan was a go-to lunch spot for office workers in Greenway Plaza. However, when the pandemic hit, the location had to close at the end of 2020. But that wasn’t the end of the road! In January 2022, they bounced back with a brand-new, bigger location in the Galleria area, known as burger-chan 2.0.
