Texas Town Ranks Among the ‘Hardest City Names to Pronounce’ in the U.S.
We discussed last week how Natchitoches, Louisiana, was listed as one of the most difficult city names in the United States to say. Now, let's go on to Texas, where Nacogdoches, another tongue twister, takes first place. Like its cousin in Louisiana, this hamlet in East Texas has left many people baffled about how to phrase it correctly. Therefore, don't worry if you've ever mispronounced its name, you're not the only one!
Many Texas communities are hard for longtime residents to pronounce correctly. The fact that some of the odd city names are difficult for visitors to pronounce is therefore not surprising. One of the small communities in the Lone Star State has been named one of the most difficult to pronounce in the nation.
What's the Hardest City to Pronounce in Texas?
Despite its seeming simplicity, Nacogdoches often baffles tourists from neighboring places, according to Reader's Digest:
Remember we were talking about Natchitoches, Louisiana, which is pronounced NAH-code-ish? And we told you not to confuse it with the similarly named town in Texas? Well, here’s where the rubber meets the road, so to speak. The similarly-named town in Texas, Nacogdoches, is pronounced NAH-coh-DOE-chess. Really, it’s not all that hard to pronounce, at least compared to the one in Louisiana, if you remember that the G is silent.
Therefore, don't feel guilty if you have trouble with Nacogdoches, regardless of whether you're from Texas or are just visiting. You have a lot of company! This Texas town has caused many trips and falls throughout the years, much to Natchitoches in Louisiana. Now you know, though, it's "NACK-uh-DOE-chiss." Saying it like a native will wow your pals the next time you see it on a map!
