The deadliest insect in the world is the mosquito. Despite its small size, mosquitoes are responsible for more deaths yearly than any other animal. They spread dangerous diseases like malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and West Nile virus. By biting people and animals, infected mosquitoes transfer viruses and parasites into the bloodstream, causing illness and sometimes death.

In addition to West Nile Virus, the Dengue Virus is the most serious mosquito-borne hazard to Louisianans right now. According to data, Untreated severe dengue fever might have a fatality rate of 10% to 20%. However, with the right supportive care, the death rate can be decreased to under 1%.

There have been 19 cases reported in 2024 in Louisiana. CLICK HERE to read more about Current Year Data from the CDC regarding Dengue in the Southern United States.

Per USA Today, back in July, 2,559 dengue cases have been documented in 45 states and territories in 2024, including 218 in Florida, 143 in New York, and 40 in California according to the CDC.
