Hi-Yo Silver! It was a classic radio show, and then "The Lone Ranger" made it to the little and big screens. The cinema seems to be where it's headed again. This incarnation will be under the eye of a big time Hollywood producer. Jerry Bruckheimer will make this movie, and as of now, Johnny Depp appears to have won the role of Tonto.

Entertainment Weekly's website reports what Depp has to say about the role of The Ranger's sidekick:

Depp, who is part Cherokee, feels a special connection to the role of Tonto. “I always felt Native Americans were badly portrayed in Hollywood films over the decades,” he says. “It’s a real opportunity for me to give a salute to them. Tonto was a sidekick in all the Lone Ranger series. [This film] is a very different approach to that partnership. And a funny one I think.”

I have not seen any news on who would play the Lone Ranger. I do think it's interesting that as of now, the focus is not on the leading role, but the sidekick. While Johnny Depp has always seemed strange to me, his acting has always impressed me. This is largely due to the fact that he seems to pick roles that fit his eccentricities. While his take on Tonto is sure to be unconventional, it should be funny, quirky and highly entertaining.
