So when might New Orleans get another shot at hosting the Super Bowl? The city had its sights set on the 2031 game, but reports are saying that chance may have slipped away.

Officials had one week to finish and submit their proposal, but the deadline passed without the paperwork being turned in. The main reason for the delay is that the lease deal between Louisiana and the New Orleans Saints for the Caesars Superdome still isn’t done.

The current lease ends in 2030, and the new plan would keep the Saints in the Superdome until 2055. The NFL is unlikely to pick New Orleans to host another Super Bowl until that long-term deal is signed.

Even so, local sports reporter Jeff Duncan says there’s no need to panic just yet. He explained that the deal is complex, involving hundreds of millions of dollars, and that everyone is simply making sure it’s done right.

Duncan also noted that the people involved don’t like to lose in negotiations. He pointed to the Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as well as the Saints and the NFL, all pushing for the best deal.
