Another Oversized Truck Hits the Famous I-10 Clearance Bar

Lake Charles, LA [KNGT-FM] - One of the most unbelievable impacts at the Westlake I-10 clearance bar happened again, and this time it seemed almost impossible to miss the warning signs.

A truck hauling an oversized shipping container attempted to pass beneath the low-clearance barrier, despite appearing far too tall to fit. The result was another collision with the now-famous structure.

The clearance bar was installed as part of ongoing traffic changes connected to the I-10 bridge replacement project in Westlake, Louisiana. While construction of the new bridge is now beginning, crews are currently relocating overhead utility lines underground to prepare the area for future work.

Because of these improvements, the westbound I-10 exit into Westlake remains temporarily closed. Drivers traveling west must follow a detour along Sampson Street, pass beneath the interstate, and drive through the clearance bar before merging back onto I-10 using a temporary entrance ramp created by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.

The barrier was designed to prevent oversized vehicles from striking the bridge, but it has developed an unexpected reputation. Countless trucks, RVs, and commercial vehicles have ignored the height restrictions, resulting in repeated crashes that have become a frequent topic on social media.

A Facebook page called The I-10 Clearance Bar, dedicated entirely to documenting these incidents, continues to attract attention, with roughly 36 recorded impacts so far. Unfortunately, as long as drivers continue taking unnecessary chances, the clearance bar will likely keep adding to its growing list of memorable encounters.
