Lake Charles, Louisiana (KNGT-FM) - It's nearly been a year since the historic snowstorm of 2025 here in Southwest Louisiana. Could history repeat itself, and we get more snow in Louisiana this January?

The idea may sound surprising, but the forecast says it is not impossible.

So far this winter, Louisiana has not been very cold. One big reason is a weather pattern called La Niña. During La Niña winters, cold air usually stays farther north. This means places like Louisiana often see warmer weather and fewer strong winter storms.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), La Niña causes the jet stream to move in a wave pattern. This brings colder and stormier weather to the northern United States, while the southern states stay warmer and drier.

NOAA is calling for a slightly warmer-than-normal winter in Louisiana this year. Rainfall is also expected to be below normal. That makes a major snow event unlikely, but small chances still exist.

Throughout the weekend, nighttime temperatures are expected to be around freezing, with a slight chance of precipitation. Could we really be in for a chance of snow flurries over the weekend? It's definitely possible, but not cold enough to actually stick.

Lake Charles Weather Outlook

Here is what the forecast looks like for Lake Charles this weekend:

  • Saturday: Partly sunny with a high near 54 degrees. North winds around 10 mph, with stronger gusts.
  • Saturday Night: A chance of rain before midnight, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers after midnight. Flurries are possible late. Low near 30 degrees.
  • Sunday: Sunny with a high near 49 degrees.
  • Sunday Night: Clear skies with a low around 32 degrees.

While another historic snowstorm is not expected, the forecast shows that cold air and a few flurries are possible. In Louisiana, even a small chance of snow is enough to get people talking.
