Best Bird Watching Seasons in Southwest Louisiana Revealed
🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — If you’ve lived around Southwest Louisiana your whole life like I have, you already know this place is packed with wildlife. Gators, fish, ducks, all that good stuff. But one thing folks don’t always think about is bird watching. And believe it or not, this area is one of the best spots in the country to see birds.
I didnt know this but, you can see birds throughout the year in Southwest Louisiana. But, fall, winter, and spring are the best times for birdwatching. During that time, a large number of birds migrate through our area.
Southwest Louisiana is situated directly between the Mississippi Flyway and the Central Flyway. What does that mean? It means most of the Birds fly right through our backyard.
What You Need to Go Birding
The good news is bird watching doesn’t take a lot of fancy gear. You can get started pretty easy.
Binoculars
You can spot birds with your eyes, but binoculars really bring them to life. You don’t have to spend a fortune, but try not to buy the cheapest pair either. Clear lenses make a big difference.
Field Guide
If you’re just getting started, a small bird guide helps a lot. It lets you match pictures with the birds you see.
Notebook or Journal
Some folks like writing down what birds they saw and where they found them.
Camera or Smartphone
A camera helps you grab photos of the cool birds you find. These days, most phones take pretty solid pictures too.
Clothes and Shoes
Wear comfortable shoes and something light. A hat helps keep the sun out your eyes. And earth tone colors work best. Bright colors and black tend to attract mosquitoes.
Sunscreen and Bug Spray
Trust me on this one. You’re gonna want both.
Water and Snacks
A lot of birding spots are out in what we call Louisiana’s Outback. Not many stores around, so bring what you need.
