KNGT | Louisiana — I don't know about y'all, but the second I walk out the front door lately, my glasses fog up. That's usually my sign that Louisiana summer has officially arrived. You know the kind of heat I'm talking about. The kind where you crank your truck, turn the A/C on high, and still spend the first five minutes sweating. The kind where your steering wheel can double as a branding iron.

How to stay cool in Louisiana Heat

Every year I tell myself I'm ready for summer. Every year Louisiana reminds me I'm not. The good news is we've gotten pretty good at figuring out ways to survive it. For me, it starts with something cold. A snowcone. An ice cream cone. Frozen yogurt. Pretty much if I can get a brain freeze from it, sign me up! It's right up there with backyard cookouts and somebody forgetting the bug spray.

Water helps too. Not just drinking it, although that should be at the top of your list. Im talking about soaking in it. Maybe it's the river. Maybe it's a boat ride. Maybe it's floating down the water with friends and pretending I don't have a hundred things waiting on me Monday morning.

Louisiana State Parks actually have swimming areas, water playgrounds, boating, tubing, and plenty of places to cool off without spending a fortune.

Another trick I've learned over the years? Find shade. Not that little patch of shade from a stop sign. I'm talking about one of those giant oak trees we have all over Louisiana. The kind with moss hanging down. The kind your grandparents probably sat under. A lawn chair, a cold drink, and a little breeze can work wonders.

Now if you're one of those folks who says, "Scotty, I ain't fighting this heat. I'm staying inside." I don't blame you one bit. Summer is a great time to check out local restaurants, breweries, museums, bowling alleys, movie theaters, and anywhere else with good air conditioning.

Matter of fact, some days my favorite outdoor activity is looking at the outdoors through a window. And here's one more thing. Try doing your outdoor stuff early.

The experts recommend getting outside in the morning or later in the evening instead of the middle of the afternoon when the sun is trying to melt everything in sight. At the end of the day, Louisiana summers are hot. Always have been. Probably always will be. But we're Louisiana folks. We fish in it. We cook in it. We mow grass in it. We go to festivals in it. We complain about it every single day. And somehow we still love it.
