It’s Time to Plant! Why Fall Is the Best Season for Louisiana Gardens
🐊 KNGT 🐊 | Louisiana — It's that time of year again and if you are like me, you want to spend a little more time outside, especially as the days become shorter and the weather gets cooler. Fall is one of the best seasons to plant here in Louisiana.
Many people think that gardening should only be done in the spring, thats not true. There are some benefits to planting in the fall. Because the earth is still warm from summer, roots can develop better before winter arrives. Additionally, you can work in the yard without having to contend with the Louisiana summer heat.
So where do we start? It's time to clean up first. Once the summer plants have finished growing, pull them out. Till up your soil and remove any weeds. To give it a boost, nows the time to add fertilizer, just dont over do it.
Louisiana Fall Vegetable Garden Guide
The LSU Ag Center is a great place to start, they break it down by region and month. Here in Southwest Louisiana, our fall gardens mostly consist of spinach, broccoli, turnips, cabbage, lettuce, and carrots. These vegetables are going to keep your garden looking like a scene from a Martha Stewart catalog.
Even in cooler weather you have to remember, water frequently. Putting mulch around your plants if you can, this will helps to prevent the soil from drying up too fast from the sun and wind. Now is a great time to plant flowers like snapdragons and pansies, since they adapt to the colder weather better.
Check out the LSU Ag Center's website or give them a call today. So grab that shovel, put on your gloves, and let's get gardening!
