This Tuesday, February 16 is Mardi Gras, and even though events in our area have all been canceled, the city of Lake Charles and Calcasieu Parish Police Jury (CPPJ) offices will be closed to observe the holiday.

This is the first time in my lifetime I can remember Mardi Gras being totally scrapped for the entire season. Folks have already missed out on Twelfth Night, and if you're in a krewe, you have missed your Mardi Gras ball.

Tomorrow would have been the start of the Mardi Gras weekend with the Merchants Parade on Friday night, the Gumbo Cook-off on Saturday, the Children's Parade on Sunday, and the Royal Gala on Monday. We all will miss the big event that is the Krewe of Krewes parade on Mardi Gras day. All these events are canceled.

For information about trash collection on the holiday, click here. Also note that city hall, recycling centers, and and public works will be closed on Mardi Gras day.

For residents outside the city limits, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury offices will be closed, which includes the permit office at Prien Lake Park on Mardi Gras day, but your garbage and trash pick-up will run as normal on Mardi Gras day for Waste Management customers.
